The Government of Mysore established a Forest Research Laboratory (FRL) in Bangalore in 1938, marking a significant step in the study and management of forest resources. In its initial years, the laboratory focused on exploring the various properties and applications of timber species, examining essential oils, and investigating non-wood forest products. Additionally, it worked diligently to develop methods for protecting wood and trees from harmful pests and diseases.

In 1956, the laboratory transitioned into a regional center of the Forest Research Institute and Colleges located in Dehra Dun, enhancing its capabilities and outreach.

In 1977, the Sandal Research Centre was opened. This center aimed to conduct in-depth research on sandalwood, a precious tree known for its aromatic qualities, exploring its genetics, growth patterns, and sustainable management practices. That same year, the marine centers of the Wood Preservation Branch, which were part of the Forest Research Institute and Colleges in Dehradun and located in communities such as Vishakhapatnam, Madras, Goa, and Kochi, were transferred to the Forest Research Laboratory in Bangalore, consolidating resources and expertise in one location.
