About Organization

The South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR) is a prominent non-governmental, non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of marine and coastal resources in the Western Indian Ocean region. Founded in 1951, SAAMBR plays a critical role in advancing marine science, environmental education, and conservation. Its primary aim is to generate scientific knowledge and provide decision support to ensure the long-term preservation of marine ecosystems.

SAAMBR is structured into three main divisions:

  • Oceanographic Research Institute (ORI)
  • uShaka Marine World
  • uShaka Sea World Education

SAAMBR was initially formed by a group of conservationists, academics, and fishermen who were concerned about the fragile state of South Africa’s marine environments. Their efforts led to the establishment of the organization, which was originally housed in the Durban Centenary Aquarium. Over the years, SAAMBR has expanded its reach and impact, moving to its current location at uShaka Marine World in 2004.

Today, SAAMBR continues to serve as a leading authority on marine conservation in South Africa and the broader Western Indian Ocean region. Its work not only benefits the local communities of KwaZulu-Natal but also contributes significantly to global efforts in marine research and sustainable resource management.
