Job Description
Marshall University seeks a dedicated and qualified individual to fill the position of Assistant and/or Associate Professor of Library Science. This 12-month, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor / Librarian II or Associate Professor / Librarian III is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the growth of the Library Science program at one of the oldest institutions of higher education in West Virginia. The successful candidate will be expected to teach graduate-level courses in Library Science, participate in the development and refinement of the graduate curriculum, and play an active role in the accreditation process, among other responsibilities. The position is available immediately and offers competitive salary and benefits.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teach two or more graduate-level Library Science (MLS) courses per semester, depending on enrollment and program needs.
- Assist in the development and refinement of a graduate curriculum in alignment with American Library Association (ALA) standards.
- Collaborate with MLS adjuncts, graduate assistants, and other student or extra-help employees to ensure effective course delivery.
- Contribute to the ALA accreditation process, assisting the director and faculty in meeting accreditation requirements.
- Embed relevant assessment functions in all courses and gather artifacts for the annual MU assessment reporting process.
- Participate in student advising, internships, and placements as part of the student success team.
- Assist with marketing, recruitment, and promotion of the program in collaboration with the director and dean’s office personnel.
- Engage in faculty governance and university service, contributing to the success of the school and university.
- Fulfill traditional library duties, including work in library systems or technical services, as necessary based on the candidate’s expertise.
- Perform additional duties and special projects to support the university library and its departments.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Function as a professional librarian with the ability to lead or contribute to projects in various university library departments.
- Collaborate effectively as a team member, while also working independently to complete tasks.
- Organize information, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines efficiently.
- Exhibit strong information literacy and technology skills.
- Contribute to the university’s committees, task forces, and other professional activities as required.
Qualifications:
Required:
- An American Library Association (ALA) accredited master’s degree in Library Science.
- An earned doctorate in Library Science or a related field (ABD candidates will be considered).
- At least two years of experience teaching cataloging and related subjects in an ALA-accredited graduate program.
- Expertise in contemporary cataloging processes and technology systems related to national cataloging standards and networks.
- Knowledge of learning management system platforms (Marshall uses Blackboard Ultra) for the delivery of both asynchronous and synchronous courses.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a demonstrated record of active participation in the profession.
Preferred:
- A second master’s degree in Library Science or a related field.
- Experience as a digital technical services librarian in an academic or public library.
- Experience working with ALA accreditation processes, including initial or reaccreditation of an MLS program.
- Knowledge of assessment programming related to MLS curriculum development and ALA accreditation reporting.
